Handling transport, storage and erection

It has been shown that when structures are erected in contaminated environments off-site preparation and painting help to avoid contamination.

Preparation and coating at the fabricators is a well-established practice but special precautions are necessary. These include:

  1. Protection of components in-store and during transit around the fabricator's own premises and on-site.
  2. System selection with off site painting in mind. Other precautions which can be taken are:
  • Designing-in of lifting lugs or brackets.
  • Provision of special lifting harness nylon slings and rubber-protected chains and chocks.
  • Allowing adequate drying / curing times for each coat before handling.
  • Methods of loading to reduce site handling to a minimum.
  • Order and timing of loading to reduce site storage to a minimum.
  • Provision of special supports packings and lashings on vehicles and when the steel is stacked.
  • Special wrapping of coated pipes and packaging of smaller items.
